जनावरांच्या खुरांची वाढ होणे ही एक नैसर्गिक आणि सततची प्रक्रिया आहे. जी जनावरे सतत चालतात किवा श्रमाची कामे करतात त्या वेळी खुरांचे जमिनीशी घर्षण होऊन ती प्रमाणात वाढतात. सध्या मात्र अयोग्य व्यवस्थापनामुळे तसेच अतिशय छोट्या बंदिस्त जागेत जनावरांना बांधून दुग्ध व्यवसाय करणे, व्यवस्थित काळजी न घेणे, वेळेवर खुरांची छाटणी न करणे आणि व्यायामाचा अभावामुळे खुरांची अतिरिक्त वाढ होण्याचे प्रमाण वाढले आहे.
