कुत्र्यांच्या परदेशी प्रजातींना श्वानप्रेमींची मोठी पसंती आहे. पण तरीही अस्सल भारतीय अशा कारवान या प्रजातीवरील श्वानप्रेमींचे प्रेम अजूनही कायम आहे. शिकार आणि राखण यासाठी उपयुक्त असणारे हे श्वान संपूर्णत: भारतीय प्रजाती म्हणून ओळखले जाते. महाराष्ट्रात साधारणतः कारवान आणि पश्मी जातीचे श्वान सर्वाधिक प्रमाणात आढळून येतात. प्रकृतिमान, शरीरयष्टी पाहता हे श्वान खूप चपळ, वेगवान व उत्साही असतात. बहुतांश शेतकरी या श्‍वानांची घर, शेत आणि जनावरांच्या राखणदारीसाठी निवड करतात.
