पावसाच्या अनियमितपणामुळे जेव्हा लांबलेल्या पावसाअभावी पिकास ताण पडतो, अशा वेळी शेततळ्यात साठविलेल्या पाण्यामधून एक किंवा दोन पाणी ठिबक किंवा तुषार पद्धतीने पिकास देऊन उत्पादन वाढण्यास मदत होऊ शकते. मात्र शेततळे खोदल्यानंतर त्यामध्ये आस्तरिकरण केले जात नाही. अस्तरीकरणामुळे शेतातील तळ्यात पाण्याचा सुरक्षित साठा उपलब्ध होतो. साठवलेले पाणी झिरपून जाऊ नये, तसेच टंचाईच्या काळात फळबागा वाचविण्यासाठी या पाण्याचा वापर केला जातो.
